The Swan Home B&B has many luxurious rooms along with 3 original functioning fireplaces. A fourth full fireplace was added to the family room in the mid 70's. All fireplaces are used throughout the cooler months for guests and ambiance. The three original fireplaces, are thought to be built following the Rutherford design, dating between 1839 and 1854.

The various rooms consist of Entry Hall with formal Staircase, Parlor with Fireplace, Library with Fireplace, large formal Dining Room with Fireplace, 4 sleeping rooms, (3 with private baths), Kitchen, 2nd floor Den/Office, and Family Room with Fireplace.

The Canal was built in the mid 1800's at about the same time The Swan Homestead was built. It is possible that some of the materials for the construction of the The Swan Homestead was either used from materials left from the construction of, or delivered to the current site by, the canal system which passes through the property.
The Canal near the Lansing Kill Gorge near Western 3 miles north of Westernville) had a lift of almost 700 feet via 70 locks from Western to Boonville (25 miles).
Feel free to discover the history and architecture of the old Canal system. It runs through the rear of the property and there are dozens of locks and other remnants within walking or biking distance to discover in the village of Westernville and Western.

Visitors to The Swan Home B&B have access to the entire exterior of the property including full Deck, Front porch, Courtyard, various flower and vegetable gardens, and a blacksmith shop with blacksmith.

The Swan Homestead, originally settled by John Swan III and later sold to Gustavus Swan, consists of the primary residence, a three story cabinet shop/ barn and a limestone icehouse. The icehouse today is used as the Westernville Smith Shop, a working Blacksmith shop, supported by a local Blacksmithing artisan.

The East Wing, which now houses the library was added around 1854.

During the Victorian era, inlaid parque floors of two tone alternating maple and walnut were installed in the Parlor, Dining Room, and Entry Hall, along with a classic Victorian bay window in the formal dining room. Oak flooring was also laid throughout the remaining rooms of the main house during this time .

The Old Wood shed located at the rear of the home was updated in the the late 1970's. It now serves as a family room for comfort and relaxation. The family room consists of wide plank flooring, a staircase to the servants quarters, and a brick hearth housing a wood stove with full brick fireplace.

The The Swan Homestead, originally heated by its 3 original fireplaces and multiple wood stoves throughout, is now efficiently heated by Pellet fuel (50%), Firewood fuel (20%), and backed up by hot water boiler (Oil) in the remaining 30% of the home.

In 2008 the current owners decided to share the wonderful architecture of the Swan Homestead with the community by developing a program to restore the homes exterior, interior, and ground, and to offer the beauty and history of the Swan Home to others through "The Swan Home B&B". The Bed and Breakfast at the The Swan Homestead is currently under construction and is slated to open in August 2010.
